he President of the Republic of Timor Leste, Francisco Guterres, conferred the ‘Sergio Vieira de Mello’ Award for the promotion of Human Rights to Fr Bong of Our sister parish in Railaco Mission for the excellent service of promoting rights of the child to food and nutrition with the Children’s Feeding Program.

Federal Member Dave Sharma MP inspired by Canice’s Kitchen
Our Federal Member, Dave Sharma MP, visited Canice’s Kitchen this week. He was impressed by the Kitchen’s sustainability and ability not only survive but to grow through COVID. Alongside a daily meal service, the Kitchen now provides additional support to its guests. In addition to regular visits from Orange Sky Laundry and Thread Together, we are providing weekly access to St Vincent’s Homeless Health, an employment and coaching service, as well as a community participation program which will offer guests the chance to work alongside qualified chefs to gain skills and confidence.

The year is fast coming to a close and I want to give you some of the flavour of our two houses. Recently I had a visit from a young friend, Joe Finsterer. He is studying film production and has done a 5 minute video interview with myself on our life here in The Rectory.

Preventing Exploitation of the Environoment he International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict calls to mind Pope Francis. The day itself is
an initiative of the United Nations. But like Pope Francis when he speaks of threats to human life, to peace or to our environment, the day speaks strongly and makes connections that we may have missed. The naming of this day brings together war and the environment, two things that may seem to be unconnected. The Pope, too, would have gone on to link these different scourges to inequality, which feeds wars and junks the environment.

The Communion of Saints –
At the beginning of November in the Catholic Calendar there is a flurry of heavenly feasts. All Saints Day, which celebrates those who are in paradise, is followed immediately by All Souls Day, with its focus on the dead who still need our prayers. The feasts themselves go back to early medieval Catholicism. They became a source of division at the time of the Reformation when the preoccupation with releasing souls from purgatory was seen by the Reformers as manipulative, mercenary and lacking in a proper trust in God’s mercy.
